Ultimate Candy House Frosting

Ultimate Candy House Frosting

I think I have shared about 10 frosting recipes here. Maybe I have a slight obsession with frosting… I don’t even think I knew I had this obsession until I started sharing them. I do love a good frosting. But, this one isn’t for cupcakes. This one is all about stiff hard construction. It still has flavor so if you are into the crunchy straight sugar frosting you can still enjoy this. If you have ever tried to build candy houses you know that one of the key elements is the “glue” that holds it all together. I have tried many different recipes, including actual glue… yes, we used hot glue and it worked great. Over the years as my kids have anxiously awaited this tradition and this year I came across this recipe given to me by my neighbor. It has been the best! It holds up and dries fast. I loved using and creating with it. This year I tried it with about 15 youth during an activity and they all loved it and it worked wonderfully!

Can you tell a difference between the boys creations and the girls… 😉

I would love to actually try gingerbread for making candy houses but I am too lazy most of the time and just end up using graham crackers. I do that because I pull this together last minute all the time, but all my kids remember is that we did it!! I call it a mom win.

All you need for this activity is:

  • Graham Crackers*
  • Candy
  • Frosting
  • Rummage through the pantry for anything (cereal, crackers, pretzels)
  • Platform of some sort (cardboard covered in tinfoil works well, or this year we just used a paper plate- see I’m lazy)

It makes for a super fun night. Do things get messy? Oh yes, but it is so worth it. It is fun to create together and spend an evening doing something different. It doesn’t take much to get this all out on the table and ready. Even dads get into this!

*Also I heard that if you want to shape graham crackers and cut them easier, you can put them between two damp paper towels and microwave them for 15 seconds. We tried it and it worked really well.

Here is the frosting recipe. Enjoy a fun night creating!

Ultimate Candy House Frosting

  • 3 egg whites
  • 4 3/4 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cream of Tartar

Step 1
Beat all together for 7-10 minutes until very stiff. Place a damp cloth on the icing to help prevent it from crusting or put it into icing bags and seal. This sets up hard once it gets any air. Make just before use. Will fill 2-3 icing bags.
